Fresh Handmade Canvas
I introduced
grass canvas more than 10 years ago and
it happens to be one of a kind in the whole country [Uganda]if not in the whole world.
Currently, I do several types of canvases out of waste materials collected from
the community.

Tusiime Mathias at the Children's Art Center in Boston
Visiting Artist from Uganda
Mathais Tusiime- an artist from Uganda visited with our Summer Arts Program last week to talk about his culture and do a small workshop. Children looked at pictures of Uganda and drew their own interpretation, filling them in with watercolor crayons. The artwork is currently on display at the South End Library. Mathais usually teaches children how to make handmade paper from recycled paper or cardboard; how to do dyeing on cloth and how to create art from recycled plastics.
Mathias is part of the Uganda Art Consortium, which provides art therapy for HIV-AIDS patients and free children's art workshops in Uganda. He is one of the most active artists with the Consortium. He has been awarded a full scholarship to 12th Annual Arts in Healthcare Summer Intensive at the University of Florida. He was selected because of his innovation and leadership in Uganda in using arts in health care. Mathias has developed programs linking art to environmental concerns and recycling as well as health issues. Mathias was a key organizer of the Arts in Health Care Conference held at Makerere University in October 2012.
