"Freedom" Mixed media on canvas By @mathiastusiime On our
inaugural "Artist of the Week" segment, we feauture @mathiastusiime
We had a pleasant surprise a while back when Tusiime Mathias passed by to
introduce his work and what he does. Tusiime is a self taught artist who started
out as Makerere University's groundskeeper (still is) and using discarded
supplies and spending time around the lecturers and students of the renowned
art department, managed to pick up a few skills that he used to develop his
artistic talent. He repurposed the waste and sugar cane pulp to make the paper
he uses. His practice paid off when he got a chance to exhibit his work not
only in Uganda, but Kenya, Denmark, Netherlands and the U.S.A. Armed with his
new found skill, experience and fame, he decided to selflessly go back to
members of his community who had no access to resources needed to pursue art
and initiated projects that enabled them, learn life skills that they then used
to not only sustain themselves, but also earn enough be able to equip themselves
with art supplies. This project resulted into the formation of Uganda community
Art skill Development and Recycling (UCASDR), a program that links Art and
Craft to environmental concerns through recycling skills development and
innovation in Uganda. Learn more about his inspiring story and his upcomimg
